Many of the most common discipline methods in society cannot claim to be characterized by either of these qualities. The current understanding of discipline is rooted in the old behaviorist understanding; the belief that children need punishment and motivation to improve. Although discipline that focuses on punishment and motivation can seem to achieve quick results, its long-term effects can leave parents with worse problems than they had before it was implemented.
Many people ask if never punishing children means we should pamper them and let them do whatever they want. This is the biggest "bogeyman" people fear! Authoritarian parenting has permeated our society, along with the idea that if children aren't punished for misbehavior, they will take over, get out of control, and stop respecting their parents. However, the real key to better behavior is to work with your child, not against them. View yourself and your children as members of a team, not as enemies fighting to see who "wins."
